HOUSTON â€" Tears were shed at John E. Hoff Courts even before the match commence on Sunday as the University of Houston women's tennis team said farewell to their two seniors, Maria Cardenas and Rocio Martin, before taking on the North Texas in the regular season finale.
Playing down a player, the Cougars faced an uphill climb in the doubles match beginning down 1-0. North Texas quickly won the doubles point with a 6-1 win on the second court where Tina Rupert and Cardenas fell to Minying Liang and Agustina Valenzuela. Despoina Vogasari and Martin were tied 3-3 with Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze when doubles concluded.
Things began to look up for the Coogs shortly into singles competition with Rupert dominating the fourth court 6-0, 6-4 over Valenzuela to bring the score to 2-1. However, North Texas received their next two points to win the day on courts two and three with Mina Markovic falling 6-2, 7-5 to Kutubidze and Martin falling 6-3, 6-3 to Anastasiya Shestakova, respectively.
