HOUSTON -- In a fierce battle at the Houston Country Club, the Houston Cougar women's tennis team went toe-to-toe with No. 7 Texas Tech, but despite close play across the singles courts, the Cougars fell 4-3 on Sunday.
As action began against the highest ranked team the Cougars have faced this season, Despoina Vogasari and Rocio Martin continued their doubles winning streak with a victory over Alex Valenstein and Gabriela Talaba on the top court 6-2. The duo improved to 4-1 this season when playing together and have won three consecutive doubles matches.
However, the Red Raiders secured the doubles point when Tina Rupert and Angela Lorenzo fell to Sarah Dvorak and Sabrina Federici 6-2 on court two and Mina Markovic and Marnie Stokes dropped their match to Felicity Maltby and Lynn Kiro 6-1, on court three.
The Cougar's looked strong in singles play, sweeping the top three court in two sets each. Just as in doubles, Vogasari battled No. 100 Talaba at the top court coming out victorious with a 6-4, 6-1 win. Vogasari tallied her team-best 18th win this season.
Markovic would go on to cruise to a victory over Dvorak 6-2, 6-4 to pick up her fourth dual win of the season, while Martin topped Kiro 6-2, 6-3, to give Houston three points on the afternoon.
Stokes was the first Cougar to fall in singles competition, being defeating by Federici on court six 6-0, 6-0. Meanwhile, Lorenzo battled Maltby throughout a close second-set tie-breaker, ultimately losing 6-3, 7-6 (5-7).
For the second time this weekend, the overall match came down to Rupert, who was facing Valenstein on the fourth court with the score tied at 3 apiece. Despite falling behind after a 6-0 defeat in the first set, Rupert battled back with a 6-2 second set victory before ultimately falling 6-1 in the final set.
