Dimitrova, Mazzari Win Flight Finals at SMU

DALLAS â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis Team turned in an impressive final day at the SMU Invitational it won all four of its matches, while Tsveta Dmitrova and Sveva Mazzari claimed singles flight championships, on Sunday, in Dallas.

Ana Glumac def. Luana Stanciu (Louisiana-Monroe) 6-4, 6-2
Dimitrova/Mazzari def. Fumagali/Rudico (Air Force) 6-4
HOW IT PLAYED OUT
Once again the Cougars opened play with a doubles match, this time coming out on top against Fumagali/Rudico of Air Force. The match played close throughout with the score being tied at both 2-2 and 4-4. Mazzari was able to hold serve to make the match 5-4 followed by a Cougar win coming out of the break to seal the match 6-4.
Dimitrova and Mazzari each had big singles matches following doubles after the pair qualified for their singles' flight finals for the second tournament in a row. Dimitrova was on the court against Nevada Apollo of Gonzaga, while Mazzari matched up against Mary Wright of SMU.
After trading games and leading 3-2 in the early part of the match, Dimitrova won three of the next four on the indoor court to take the first set 6-3. Apollo responded with a 6-2 win in set two to force a decisive third set. However, Dimitrova was able to regroup, storming to a 6-1 win in the final set to take the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. The win for Dimitrova is her sixth straight to open the season, and her second consecutive flight championship.
In the only singles match on the outdoor courts, Mazzari opened her flight final match up 4-1 against Wright. After dropping the next two games, Mazzari won eight of the next nine points to take the set 6-3. The two traded breaks throughout the first five games before Mazzari held serve to make the score 4-2. After yet another break, Mazzari was again able to hold serve to clinch the match 6-3, 6-2. Mazzari has won five consecutive matches this season and has appeared in both flight finals with her match at the Rice Invitational being shortened due to rain with her in the lead.
After a win in her match on Saturday, Glumac was on the court against Stanciu on the indoor courts. Glumac and Stanciu battled throughout the first set, trading games. With set one hanging in the balance, Glumac took serve with the score at 5-4 and was able to hold for the 6-4 win. Glumac fell behind early in the second set but came roaring back to reclaim the lead at 3-2. The Belgrade, Serbia, native didn't stop there, claiming the next three games to seal the match 6-2.
Houston finished the weekend with an 8-1 record in singles play while winning two flight championships and holding a 9-3 mark overall.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars will head west for the ITA Texas Regionals, in Waco, Texas. The event is scheduled to be held Oct. 20-24, and will be held at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.

For a minimum gift of $1,000, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation, a stadium blanket, fleece jacket and a lesson from the coach.
GRAND SLAM
For a minimum gift of $2,500, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation, a stadium blanket, fleece jacket, a lesson from the coach and a group lesson from the coaching staff.
