WHAT TO WATCH FOR
After starting her singles career 6-0, Tsveta Dimitrova will look to continue her strong play at the ITA Regional Championship. Dimitrova has claimed flight championships in each of the Cougars' two tournaments this season. The first came at the Rice Invitational where Dimitrova won her first two matches in straight sets before defeating Christina Sisti of Tulane 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 in the final. The SMU Invitational was more of the same for Dimitrova after winning her first two matches in straight sets, the freshman won her final over Nevada Apollo of Gonzaga 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to extend her winning streak.
Dimitrova will meet Alba Cortina Pou of Texas Tech in the first round on Thursday.
Sveva Mazzari also holds a perfect singles record in the fall for the Cougars, entering the weekend at 5-0. Mazzari rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 victory in her first match at the SMU Invitational before winning 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 the next day to advance to her second consecutive flight finals. Mazzari cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mary Wright of SMU to claim her flight championship on the final day of the invitational. Mazzari also reached the flight finals at the Rice Invitational after 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-4 victories in the opening two rounds. However, her flight championship match was halted due to rain with Mazzari leading 3-2 in the third set.
Mazzari's first round match on Thursday will be against Sarah Savedra from Incarnate Word.
Junior Ana Glumac enters the regional with a 4-1 record in singles play during her first semester on campus. Glumac advanced to the flight finals of the Rice Invitational after winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 in the opening round before battling Kateryna Avram of Northwestern State to a 1-6, 6-0, 7-5 victory in the semifinals. Unfortunately, Glumac's finals match was also cut short due to weather after taking set one of the flight final 7-6(3). Glumac dropped her opening match in the SMU Invitational before rallying to win her final two matches 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 over Carla Cerdan Vives and 6-4, 6-2 over Luana Stanciu of Louisiana-Monroe.
Glumac's first test at the ITA Texas Regionals will be Sam Houston State's Mila Milanovic.
The doubles pair of Dimitrova and Mazzari will be in action for the Cougars for the third time this season at the regionals. Mazzari and Dimitrova have combined for a 3-3 record this season, including a 2-1 performance at the Rice Invitational in September.
Dimitrova and Mazzari will open the tournament against Angeles de los Rios/Agustina Serio of UT Arlington.
The Cougars hold an 18-4 overall mark during the fall season, with a 15-1 record in singles play.
