Cougars Fall 2-0 in Conference Opener

HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar women's soccer team dropped its American Athletic Conference opening game, falling to East Carolina 2-0, at Carl Lewis Field, on Sunday.
Senior goalkeeper Jordan Brown turned away three Pirate shots, while sophomore forward Vanessa Almaguer led the Cougars with four shots. The Cougars saw their three-game winning streak snapped in the loss despite outshooting East Carolina 15-13 including 10-5 in the second half.
"There were some positive things we can take away from this game," Head Coach Chris Pfau said. "ECU is a very talented team that went to the conference final four last season, and we made it a good game. However, this was probably the most frustrating game that we have played in a while."
Kendall Frey scored each of East Carolina's two goals in the contest, with her first coming in the 24th minute on a ball played in by Autumn Berry. The ball bounced around the box before finding Frey who was able to finish in the right side.
The Cougars would hold the remainder of the half, but the Pirates struck quickly in the second half when Frey was able to score just 22 seconds into the second period. After a nifty pass from Courtney Taybron, Frey found herself all alone for the score.
"We are so close, and we did some nice things, and for the most part we did a good job creating some good opportunities," Pfau said. The frustrating part is for as well as we did we gave up two soft goals. On both goals we just were not tough enough on the ball and gave it to them. At this level, and as good as our conference is, you cannot give the other team those goals."
