HOUSTON - The Houston Cougar women's soccer program wrapped up the non-conference portion of their 2015 schedule with a 2-0 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday at Carl Lewis Field.
Houston heads into American Athletic Conference play on a three-game winning streak and finishes the non-conference schedule with a 4-4-0 overall record. The shutout marked the team's third straight clean sheet victory and fourth in their last five games.
"One of the things I have always said is to become a good team you have to learn to win when you are not at your best," Houston Head Coach Chris Pfau said. "I thought that we did not have our legs, and we were not all there mentally, but we fought through it and got a well-deserved win. I could not be more proud of this team and what they have accomplished in such a short period of time."
The Cougars found the scoreboard halfway through the first half off of the team's first corner kick of the contest. Sophomore Vanessa Almaguer crossed the corner to the back post where sophomore Selena Peters was waiting to bury the header past the keeper.
Houston added another goal late off the foot of freshman forward Desiree Bowen. Bowen found herself in all alone on a ball from junior Shayne Clewett that was tipped on, and was able to roll the shot past the keeper to extend the lead with under 10 minutes to play. Peters and Bowen are now tied with senior Lexa Green for the team lead in goals this season with three each, while Almaguer picked up her second assist of the season, and Clewett picked up her first assist of the year.
Senior goalkeeper Jordan Brown stopped three shots en route to her third consecutive shutout victory. The League City, Texas, native now has four shutouts on the season and seven for her career.
"We are now 4-1 at home and have won four out of last five games with the last three games being shutouts," Pfau added. "If we have the same energy and belief going into conference play, we will be fine."
