FULL ITA SINGLES RANKINGS
SKILLMAN, N.J. â€" University of Houston junior Despoina Vogasari is ranked No. 42 in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I singles rankings of the 2015-16 season, the organization announced Tuesday. Vogasari is the only ranked singles player from the American Athletic Conference.
A native of Athens, Greece, Vogasari was listed in every ITA singles poll of 2014-15, peaking at No. 21 and ending the season at No. 61. The junior has been ranked in 19 consecutive ITA singles polls dating back to March 14, 2014, and she owns five victories over singles players who are ranked in the 2015-16 preseason poll.
Vogasari is coming off one of the most successful individual seasons in Houston Tennis history. She finished the year 30-9 in singles play, including a 19-5 dual season mark. Vogasari was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was selected for the NCAA Singles Championship at the end of the season. She was the first Cougar to accomplish either feat since 2002, when UH alum Sarah Borwell was named Conference USA Player of the Year and made the second round of the NCAA's season-ending singles tournament.
Vogasari enters the 2015-16 season with a 40-10 (.800) career dual record, the highest mark in Houston history. Overall, the 2014 USTA/ITA Texas Regional Champion sports a 55-17 singles record, with her .764 winning percentage ranking as the third-best mark in the Houston record books.
Last week, Vogasari was chosen to represent Houston at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The junior opens play in the Qualifying Round, which begins Oct. 6, and the prestigious tournament runs through Oct. 11.
