WBCA Release
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - University of Houston Women's Basketball senior Jessieka Palmer has been nominated for the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and Allstate Insurance Agency announced Wednesday.
Palmer, a native of La Marque, Texas, was nominated for the award for her efforts in making the Houston community a better place. The senior has taken a leadership role in Houston's service activities, including volunteer efforts at the Houston Food Bank, the Ronald McDonald House, Star of Hope, the Boys & Girls Club of Houston, the Houston Area Women's Center and many other worthy charities. Palmer often volunteers her time when she is not with her Cougar teammates.
"Jessieka continues to be a leader for our program on and off the court," Houston head coach Ronald Hughey said. "I'm proud that she is a candidate for the Good Works Team, and I'm excited to see the way she continues to guide our young roster."
On the court, Palmer is a versatile performer who plays a major role in Houston's on-court success. The senior is averaging 8.8 points per game through Houston's first six contests, including a career-high 25-point eruption on Nov. 26 against No. 24/23 George Washington.
In its fourth year, the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team recognizes players at all levels of college basketball who have made outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement. From establishing nonprofits that provide youth with the necessary tools to become leaders of tomorrow, to raising awareness around pertinent issues that could save lives, these student-athletes exhibit impeccable leadership skills both on and off the court.
The 103 WBCA nominees were submitted by sports information directors and college basketball coaches across the country. From the nominations, special voting panels, headlined by former University of Tennessee basketball athlete, NCAA champion and WNBA legend Tamika Catchings, and former Duke University basketball athlete, two-time NCAA® champion and seven-time NBA All-Star Grant Hill, will select two 10-member teams comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA Division I level and five student-athletes from Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February.
Members of the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team will be recognized during the 2016 WBCA Convention and at the 2016 NCAA Women's Final Four in Indianapolis, and will also participate in a local volunteer project. Allstate is an official corporate partner of the WBCA, NABC and NCAA.
