PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Houston Tennis junior Despoina Vogasari was named American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Month, the league office announced Monday. The monthly award is the second of the season for Vogasari and the fourth of her career.
Vogasari posted a 6-2 record in October against a schedule loaded with the top competition in the nation. Included in Vogasari's six victories are three wins against nationally ranked opponents.
The Athens, Greece, native opened the month by splitting a pair of matches at the ITA/Riviera Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Vogasari's win came against No. 63 Clementina Riobueno of Miami (Fla.), 6-4, 6-1.
Vogasari finished the month at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships in College Station. The defending champion at the event, the Houston junior won her first five matches and advanced to the Championship Match. Along the way, Vogasari earned wins over No. 86 Sabrina Federici of Texas Tech, 7-5, 6-2, and No. 31 Saska Gavrilovska of Texas A&M, 6-1, 7-5.
The No. 42 singles player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason rankings, Vogasari is 9-2 overall this season and 64-19 for her career. Her .771 career winning percentage ranks third in Houston history.
Vogasari's trophy case is filled with conference awards. She is the 2014 American Freshman of the Year, 2015 American Player of the Year, a five-time league Player of the Week and a four-time Player of the Month.
