COLLEGE STATION, Texas - University of Houston Tennis student-athletes Despoina Vogasari and Mina Markovic took the court Thursday on the opening day of the 2015 USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships at the Mitchell Tennis Center. Vogasari, the reigning Texas Regional Singles Champion, began her title defense with a straight sets victory.
Making her first career Texas Regionals appearance, Markovic opened her Singles Championship run in the Round of 128, where she faced Alexis Thoma of North Texas. Despite multiple rallies, the Houston sophomore was defeated, 6-2, 6-3.
A junior from Athens, Greece, Vogasari entered the tournament as the No. 3 overall seed and was awarded a bye to the Round of 64 after taking the Texas crown one year ago. In her opening match of the 2015 tournament, the No. 42-ranked singles competitor in all of collegiate tennis faced Jacobea Junger of UTSA. While the first set was a back-and-forth battle, Vogasari got better as the match went on and earned a 7-6 (6-3), 6-2 victory.
The singles triumph was the 60th of Vogasari's Houston career and bumped her career Texas Regionals singles record to 7-0. It was also her third career win over Junger in as many tries.
After singles play to start the day, the Cougars turned their attention to the doubles draw in the afternoon. In the Round of 64, Markovic and Vogasari teamed up to face Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze from North Texas. The Mean Green duo earned the victory, 6-3.
