PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Houston Tennis junior Despoina Vogasari was named American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Month, the league office announced Wednesday. The monthly conference award is the third of Vogasari's career.
Vogasari won the award after going 3-0 in the No. 1 Singles draw at the Rice Invitational, held Sept. 25-27 in Houston. She opened the event with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sam Houston State's Fabienne Gettwart and followed that by defeating Astrid Gehre of UT-Arlington, 6-2, 6-0, in the Quarterfinals. The junior ended her tournament with a 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 triumph over Lindsey Hodge of Rice in the Semifinals.
Vogasari, the 42nd-ranked singles player in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Associaiton poll, was slated to face No. 48 Breaunna Addison of Texas in the Rice Invitational Finals before rain forced the match to be cancelled.
The Athens, Greece, native also won American Player of the Month honors in September and October of 2014, and she is a five-time American Player of the Week selection. The American's 2014 Freshman of the Year and 2015 Player of the Year, Vogasari currently sports a 58-17 (.773) career record.
