Sept. 27, 2014 Houston - Coming off a successful first day at the Rice Invitational, the Cougars continued that performance on Saturday.
In doubles play, Maria Cardenas and Angela Lorenzo first took on the SMU pair of Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Mary Wright in the quarterfinals. The Houston duo held fast and took the match 8-5. Later in the day, the pair faced off with Rice's Savannah Durkin and Stephanie Nguyen, battling to within two match points of victory, before ultimately falling to Rice, 8-7.
Lorenzo was the star of singles play yet again for the Cougars, as defeated Nguyen with a dominating showing, taking the match 6-1, 6-0. The freshman became the first Cougar in the modern era to win two championships in her first two collegiate tournaments.
Teammates Charlotte Phillips and Maria Cardenas brought forth their own strong performances, matching Lorenzo stroke for stroke. Phillips defeated Rice's Solo Zinko, 6-2, 6-3, while Cardenas beat UT-Arlington's Elizabeth Toms, 7-6(5), 3-6, 10-4. Cardenas will play in the final of the Blue singles draw tomorrow, when she takes on Savannah Durkin.
Match Notes:
- Phillips and Lorenzo are co-champions of the Gray draw. They will not contest the title, instead sharing it & playing each other's Rice opponents from today in exhibition matches tomorrow
- Lorenzo and Cardenas will play in the third-place match of the doubles draw
- After going winless against Rice in her last two seasons, Phillips has two wins against them in the last two weekends.
- The Cougars are 4-1 overall on the day and 9-1 for the tournament
