Sept. 26, 2014 Houston - Picking up right where they left off in last week's performance at the Solinco Houston Open, the Cougars continued their hot start to the fall campaign.
The doubles duo of Maria Cardenas and Angelo Lorenzo earned a first round bye and will wait to see whom they will play in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning.
As part of the Blue draw in singles play, Cardenas opened up the tournament with back-to-back strong performances. In her first match, she easily defeated Louisiana Tech's Jasmin Britos by a score of 6-0, 6-3. Moving into the quarterfinals of the Blue draw, Cardenas once again put forth a strong showing, coming back from losing the first set and taking the match against UT-Arlington's Astrid Gehre 3-6, 6-2, 10-5.
Taking a cue from their fellow Cougar, Charlotte Phillips and Angela Lorenzo brought out their own noteworthy performances, with both advancing into the semifinals of the Gray draw.
Phillips quickly dispatched both of her competitors on the day, as she easily took down SMU's Macie Elliot 6-0, 6-4 in the first round of the Gray singles draw, and later beat UT-Arlington's Christine Foote 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
Fresh off her Solinco Houston Open championship last weekend, Angela Lorenzo earned a bye into the quarterfinals, where she battled SMU's Mary Wright and nearly replicated the score line of teammate Maria Cardenas, winning by a score of 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.
