Houston - It was Angela Lorenzo's turn to take the reins in Sunday's action of the Solinco Houston Open.
The freshman delivered convincingly, earning her first collegiate tournament championship, as she defeated Lamar's Hanna Elfving by a score of 6-0, 6-1 in the final match of the #5 singles draw. Earlier in the day, Lorenzo also scored a victory over Louisiana Tech's Taly Merker, when Merker withdrew due to injury.
Her fellow teammate Rocio Martin also found success in the singles draw, winning against Stephen F. Austin's Denise Maxl in the #1 singles draw consolation final, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5. Charlotte Phillips looked to continue her roll from Saturday's action, as she faced off with McNeese State's Sarah Jurakova in the #2 singles draw final. Fighting hard, Phillips was ultimately defeated by Jurakova in a tightly contested affair by a score of 7-5, 6-4.
The Cougars also took part in doubles action as well. The duo of Angela Lorenzo and Rocio Martin played Louisiana Tech's Manoela Chiacchio and Alexandra Starkova but were unable to re-discover their success from Friday, falling 8-4. Charlotte Phillips teamed with Stephen F. Austin's Valeria Terentyeva and conquered Lamar's Hanna Elfving and Anna Spengler, 8-3.
