Houston - The American Athletic Conference has named sophomore Despoina Vogasari as player of the month for September.
The honor caps a phenomenal September for the young Cougar and one in which she managed to hit many personal and team milestones, including defeating her highest ranked opponent to date, the fifty-three ranked player in the nation, Sophie Watts of Fresno State.
Vogasari becomes the first Cougar to win an AAC player of the month award, this after leading the conference in the spring with 3 weekly awards.
The monthly award is presented during the fall season to a male and female player who has displayed superior performance on the court each month.
Notes on Vogasari's September:
-Vogasari reached the final round of the Riviera All-American Championships round of qualifying (best result in American conference)
-She is the first Cougar to reach the final round of Qualifying since Sarah Borwell in 2001
- She is the only player from the American Conference ever to make the Qualifying, and this is the best All-American Championships result by any American conference female tennis player
- Vogasari's singles record for the month of September is 4-2
- Was also a finalist at the CCLR Collegiate Invitational in Little Rock where she beat fellow All-American Qualifier Mai El Kamash (#28 Ole Miss) and Karyn Guttormsen (#21 Oklahoma State)
- At the CCLR Collegiate Invitational, Vogasari & teammate Elena Kordolaimi had a win over Flavia Araujo/Nicole Breaux (#59 Arkansas)
