Cougars Host Jason's Deli Collegiate Invitational

HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team will play the role of hosts this weekend, as they welcome 12 opponents to the John E. Hoff Courts for the Jason's Deli Collegiate Invitational. Play begins on Friday, October 31 and concludes on Sunday, November 2.
UH will welcome squads from Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Lamar, Northwestern State, Oklahoma, Rice, Sam Houston State, SMU, Syracuse, TCU and Tyler JC this weekend. Additional matches will be played on the Rice campus.

The Cougars are coming off of a terrific showing at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships in Waco, held October 16-20. Leading the pack was sophomore Despoina Vogasari, who advanced all the way from the No. 7 seed to win the event. Vogasari is the first Texas Regional champion in Cougar history.
Senior Elena Kordolaimi advanced to the semifinals at the event, while junior Maria Cardenas lost in the Round of 128 but won two consolation matches. Houston was the only school with two semifinal representatives in Waco.

Houston had an outstanding showing at last season's Cougar Fall Classic. Kordolaimi and Cardenas each captured their singles flights, while Vogasari rebounded from an opening loss to win her consolation bracket.

Though the majority of the UH squad will complete their fall schedules this weekend, Vogasari's Texas Regional title earned her a spot in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. The event runs from November 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., site of the US Open. The prestigious season-ending tournament features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for both men and women.
