Preview: USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships

Oct. 15, 2014 Houston - The University of Houston women's tennis team will begin their fourth team competition of the fall, as they travel to Waco to take part in the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships at Baylor University.
With 128 players in the singles draw, 64 teams in the doubles draw and every Division I school in the state of Texas involved, this tournament will be significantly larger then any the Cougars will take part in during the fall season.
The Cougars will be have two seeded players in the singles draw, 7th seed Despoina Vogasari and 14th seed Elena Kordolaimi. With the seeding of Vogasari and Kordolaimi, it marks the first time in the modern era that two Houston players obtained seeds in the top 16.
Maria Cardenas and Rocio Martin round out the Cougar contingent in the competition.
The winner of the singles and doubles draws advances to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, in Flushing Meadows, NY - the site of the US Open.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serve as the culmination of the fall season. This prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women.
Gaining automatic entry into the tournament are champions from the USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships held across the country, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl, and the consolation champions, doubles finalists, men's singles quarterfinalists and women's singles semifinalists from the ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, which Vogasari and Kordolaimi just played in.
