FLORENCE, S.C.--- Near victory turned into heartbreaking defeat Tuesday afternoon, as University of Houston freshman Despoina Vogasari fell in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 7-5) in round three of qualifying action at the Florence Open.
Vogasari again competed as an amateur and was paired up with one of the nation's top recruits for the class of 2014. Vogasari had her on the ropes, as she sported a 5-3 advantage in the final set, before she stumbled away multiple match point opportunities to eventually lose the set and the match.
"It's a shame that we missed several opportunities to close out with match points in the third set," said head coach Patrick Sullivan. "We have traveled a long way this fall to be taught the same lesson over and over again, and now it's on all of us to make these losses worthwhile by learning something from them."
"You play like you practice, and hopefully this loss will sting enough to help us change some bad practice habits."
Vogasari came just one win shy of qualifying for the main draw. The Cougars will return to action next Monday when they compete in the New Braunfels Open.
