CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - University of Houston tennis senior Maja Kazimieruk fell in a hard-fought three-set semifinal match on Sunday to wrap up play for the Cougars at the Islanders Open.
Kazimieruk met Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Stefania Nicolae in the semifinals following three victories in the tournament's first two days, and the contest went down to the wire with the Poznan, Poland, native coming up short.
Kazimieruk blanked her opponent in the opening set and dropped a hard-fought second frame, 6-4, before ultimately falling 10-8 in the third-set tiebreaker.
"Unfortunately, Maja couldn't quite pull through today," assistant coach Jo Keene said. "She played a good match and stayed tough; it just came down to a couple of points in the end. She's had a solid tournament and one than she can continue to build from. Overall there are a lot of positives to take from this weekend, and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone continue to work on their game."
The Cougars return to action on Friday for a three-day tournament at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin.
