HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team dominated all phases of Friday's match in a 7-0 win over McNeese State at the Metropolitan Racquet Club. The Cougars claimed their first win of the spring season to improve to 1-2 overall.
"I'm very pleased with the win today," head coach John Severance said. "We were the more disciplined team and that's how we have to play from here on out. Everyone had great attention spans and were very focused today."
The Cougars made quick work in singles play, claiming all six wins in straight sets while outscoring the Cowgirls by a 72-15 margin.
Giorgia Pozzan led off singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lara Pujol at the No. 2 position and Bryony Hunter followed with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Tea Tvrtkovic at the top spot for her first win of the spring.
Liselot Koenen followed up with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Diana Pirciu at the No. 5 position to improve to 3-0 this season, while fellow freshman Charlotte Phillips earned her first victory of the spring with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Andreea Nenu at the No. 4 spot to officially clinch the match for Houston.
Two more Cougars closed out the singles portions with their first singles wins of the 2012 season, as Celia Fraser posted a 6-1, 6-1 rout at the No. 3 position and Maja Kazimieruk completed the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 spot.
The Cougars wouldn't back off in doubles play, outscoring McNeese by a 24-8 margin en route to a complete sweep.
Houston's top tandem of Hunter and Pozzan led off with an 8-2 victory over the Cowgirl duo of Tvrtkovic and Anastasia Surkova to improve to 22-10 together since the start of the 2010-11 season.
In her first action with the Cougars since the 2009-10 season, senior Laura Ring teamed up with Koenen to defeat Pujol and Marcella Castaldi, 8-3, while the sophomore tandem of Dionne Sanders and Jo Garvey won six-straight games to claim an 8-3 victory at the No. 3 spot.
The Cougars return to action against Northwestern State at 10 a.m., Feb. 11 at John E. Hoff Courts.
