HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team was plagued by a long scoring drought to close the first half and open the second, falling to UAB by a score of 67-43 on Sunday afternoon at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Houston held a 16-13 advantage over the Blazers (13-3, 4-0) with 6:45 remaining in the opening half when UAB scored its first bucket in over nine minutes en route to a 21-6 run to close the half and take a 34-22 lead into the break.
The Cougars couldn't snap the skid entering the second half, failing to score any points for over five minutes as the Blazers pushed their lead to 20 points.
UAB would stretch the lead to 51-26 with 11:57 remaining, marking a 38-10 run over a period of 14:45 before the Cougars' shots started to fall.
Houston put together a 10-2 run fueled by six points from freshman forward Amanda Lawson and a 3-point bucket from senior guard Roxana Button to cut the deficit to 17 points, but three-straight turnovers turned into six points for UAB as it pushed the lead back out to over 20 points.
Turnovers played a big role in the game as the Cougars turned the ball over 24 times, turning into 30 points for the Blazers.
Houston got off to a slow start to the contest with UAB jumping out to a 13-3 lead at the 15:51 mark, but the Cougars came back with a 13-0 run that spanned over nine minutes as Button and Lawson combined for 11 points of the 13 points.
Button pushed her double-digit scoring streak to 16 games with a team-high 15 points. The Coppell, Texas, native played all 40 minutes for the second-straight game and was 2-of-3 from 3-point range and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Lawson put up double figures for the third-straight game with 13 points to go with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Lawson went 5-of-9 from the field in 37 minutes of action.
Senior guard Michelle White led the team and tied a career high with nine boards while Mae Woods, Danielle Parks and Voché Martin each added four points.
Houston was limited to 33 percent shooting (15-of-45) from the field while going 11-of-15 from the free-throw line (73 percent). UAB shot 42 percent (24-of-57) from the field, including a 48 percent clip in the second half, and connected on six 3-pointers on 20 attempts.
