HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's soccer team defeated UAB 2-1 Sunday at Robertson stadium. An early goal by senior Stephanie Derieg put the Cougars in position to take their first conference win.
"Overall I'm happy with the win," head coach Susan Bush said. "It's always important to get up early, it kind of takes the air out of the other team and gives confidence as the game moves on. We have to stay focused for 90 minutes and keep the ball out of our net and get the shutout."
In the second minute of action, Stephanie Derieg was able to drive a shot past Blazer keeper Katie Getzinger for her first goal of the year to put the Cougars up 1-0. Houston was the aggressor early, outshooting UAB 11-3 in the first frame.
In the second half, the Houston matched its output as freshman Alexis Weaver added a score for the Cougars in the 59th minute. Weaver freed herself up on the right wing where she set up and drove a shot just inside the left edge of the goalpost, giving the Cougars a 2-0 advantage.
UAB (3-6-0) showed signs of life when midfielder Emma Smith scored in the 65th minute. Cougar keeper Cami Koski slipped attempting a save, leaving an empty net, Smith then capitalized on the opportunity, bringing the blazers within one.
The Cougars were able to hold UAB scoreless for the remainder of the match and went on to take the decision 2-1. Houston improved to 4-6-0 on the year with the victory. The Cougars are 1-1-0 in conference play.
Houston played well on both sides of the ball, outshooting the Blazers 21-5, while allowing only two shots on frame.
