HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team evened the series against Ole Miss with an 8-2 win Saturday night at Cougar Field. The Cougars overcame a 2-1 deficit, scoring four runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh to secure the win and improve to 5-1 on the season.
"The difference in the ball game, offensively tonight, were the quality at bats," head coach Todd Whitting said. "If we go up to the plate and have a good quality at bat great things are going to happen."
The Cougars got four solid innings on the mound from Jordan Lewis. In his second career start, Lewis allowed two runs with four strikeouts. Matt Creel would come in, however, to earn the win and improve to 2-0, pitching four scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Dakota Dill pitched the final inning, allowing one hit with three strikeouts.
"Again we had outstanding pitching," Whitting added. "(Jordan) Lewis went out there and did exactly what we needed him to do. (Matt) Creel was absolutely big time out of the bull pen. To come in at the middle of the game, extend it all the way to the end and hold them right where they were was huge. It gave us a chance to get our offense going, get some timely hits and take advantage of some situations."
Trailing 2-1 entering the sixth inning, M.P. Cokinos singled through the middle with one out to start the Cougar's comeback. The Ole Miss pitching staff walked the next two batters loading the bases. Travis Trial plated Cokinos after being hit by a pitch and Houston tied the score when John Cannon earned the third walk of the inning. The Cougars regained the lead 3-2 when Landon Appling reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Trial.
Houston continued to add to its lead in the seventh inning. Chase Jensen led off with a single to center field and Ramsey followed on a fielder's choice play. The attempt to throw Jensen out at second failed and UH had two runners on base. Cokinos and Codey Morehouse would then hit back-to-back triples, giving the Cougars their final run total of the night.
UH started the night off scoring a run in their first at bat. With two outs, Jensen singled through the left side and moved to third base on Ramsey's single up the middle. Cokinos would double to left field, plating Jensen to give UH the 1-0 lead.
The Rebels would quickly even the score 1-1 in the top of the third when Will Allen hit the first home run of his career over the left field fence. Ole Miss would then take a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, plating Preston Overbey, who reached base on a double to right field.
