HOUSTON - Despite taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the University of Houston baseball team was unable to hold off the Ole Miss Rebels, falling 8-3 Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Cougar Field.
With the loss, Houston falls to 5-2 on the season and finishes the series against Ole Miss 1-2.
For the second-straight game the Cougars struck first. With one out, Ryan Still drew a walk and advanced on Chase Jensen's single to centerfield. Still would then come around to score from second on a deep single to left field by Caleb Ramsey.
The Rebels evened the score in the top of the second and plated two runners in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Ole Miss continued to pull away from the Cougars, sending three runners home in the fourth inning for their largest lead of the contest, 6-1.
Houston would pull within three, 6-3, in the fifth inning. Still again led off the inning, hitting a double down the left field line before scoring on Ramsey's double to centerfield. Codey Morehouse recorded an infield hit that plated Ramsey but the Cougar rally would end there. The Rebels tacked on two runs in the eighth inning to secure the win.
Chase Dempsay earned the start on the mound, going two innings. He surrendered one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Taylor Hammack fell to 0-1 on the mound, giving up five runs on five hits in one inning. Jordan Mannisto added an inning of scoreless relief and Chase Wellbrock pitched the final four innings. Wellbrock gave up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
UP NEXT
Houston will travel to San Antonio, Texas for a midweek match up against UTSA at 6 p.m. on March 1. Following the game against the Roadrunners, the Cougars will participate in the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park. The weekend will begin March 4 against Baylor, continue March 5 against Kentucky and conclude March 6 against Texas A&M.
