HOUSTON - The Cougar soccer team fell to Stephen F. Austin 0-1 Friday afternoon at the Carl Lewis Complex. The loss drops the Cougars record to 3-2-1.
"We didn't play well as a team," said head coach Susan Bush. "The shots were there but we were unable to get better looks and finishes and this is what happens when you can't connect."
The first half saw both teams struggling to connect on passes and few shots for both squads.
Freshman Kylie Cook connected on a header off a corner kick but was unable to bring the ball on target in the 15th minute.
Freshmen Jasmine Martinez and Nicole Duarte worked a great give-and-go that set up sophomore Courtney Peacock's cross inside the penalty box but the ball was unable to find a header and it sailed through the box.
SFA earned the lead in the 47th minute off a free kick. Jordan King hit a ball that freshman goalkeeper Cami Koski had trouble locating. Koski punched the ball up but the ball hit the post and went into the goal for the game winner.
Houston poured on the pressure and totaled 16 shots to the Ladyjacks 7 but were unable to get clean looks. Eight shots were on goal and one appeared to cross the line but contact was made with the SFA keeper and a foul was called.
Junior Jessica Zavalza displayed great pace as she brought the ball from the halfline all the way to a shot just outside the goalie box but the ball sailed wide.
Senior Melanie Adelman connected on a header off another Peacock cross but the SFA goalie was able to change directions and make a diving save.
Moments later Adelman provided a through ball to Zavalza who delivered a shot on goal but was turned away by the keeper.
The Cougars continued to send numbers forward and the defense shut down any counter attacks the Ladyjacks threw at them but the damage was done.
Koski made one save on the day but was a key outlet all day for the backline and delivered long clearances to help the attackers.
