HOUSTON - Despite a home run from Chris Wallace in his final game as a Cougar, the University of Houston baseball team dropped its season finale, 10-6, to Southern Miss Friday night in its final game at the Conference USA Championship.
The home run gave the Cypress, Texas, native at least 10 home runs in a season for the first time in his career. He finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a home run.
Zak Presley added a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored and two RBIs, and Caleb Ramsey was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Barry Laird made the start on the mound in his final game, going a career long 5.2 innings and tying his career-high with three strikeouts. He allowed five runs on nine hits for the loss to finish the season 1-3.
Houston was able to take the early, 2-0, lead after Blake Kelso led off the contest reaching base on an error by Southern Miss third baseman Joey Archer. He would advance to second when Joel Ansley earned a walk and scored on Ramsey's single through the middle. M.P. Cokinos continued the inning with a fielder's choice, and Presley sent Ramsey home with a ground ball past second base.
B.A. Vollmuth would go on to tie the contest, 2-2, in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run over the left field fence before the Golden Eagles added two more runs to take a 4-2 lead.
The teams traded runs in the fourth inning, including Wallace's home run in the top of the frame. The Golden Eagles then extended their lead, 10-3, scoring five runs in the seventh inning.
Presley led off the top of the eighth with a walk before scoring on Wallace's single through the left side.
Houston then added two runs in the top of the ninth for the game's final score. Ryan Still earned a lead-off walk and scored on Cokinos' double to left field. Presley's single through the left side, plated Ramsey, who walked, for the final run of the game.
The Cougars finish the season with a 25-32 overall record after going 1-2 in the C-USA Championship.
