Baseball Loses Series Opener to Southern Miss, 10-9

Hattiesburg, Miss. - The University of Houston baseball team lost its series opener to Southern Miss, 10-9, Friday night at Pete Taylor Park.
Southern Miss took the early 2-0 lead when B.A. Vollmuth hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning before scoring on Mark Ellis' single through the left side.
The Cougars were able to cut the deficit in half as Codey Morehouse scored on Ryan Still's single to right field after reaching base on an infield single. Houston then took its first lead of the contest, 3-2, in the third inning after Joel Ansley singled through the right side and Caleb Ramsey reached on a two base error by Golden Eagle third baseman Joey Archer. M.P. Cokinos plated the tying run, reaching base on a second Southern Miss error and UH then took the lead on Zak Presley's RBI single through the right side.
The two teams traded leads through the next two at bats. Southern Miss put up three runs in the bottom of the third but Houston answered with two in top of the fourth. Ryan Still reached base on a walk and Blake Kelso and Ansley recorded back-to-back singles to load the bases. Ramsey plated Still with a ground out to first base and Kelso scored on a wild pitch by Scott Copeland.
Southern Miss tied the contest once again in the fifth inning with a single run but Houston responded in the sixth inning to take the lead with four runs. Chris Wallace singled through the middle and advanced to second on Still's sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. Kelso advanced Wallace a base with a single to shortstop before scoring on a passed ball. Ramsey then gave the Cougars a 7-6 lead with a single through the middle and Presley's double to left field plated two more runs.
The Golden Eagles posted a single run in the sixth inning and then took the lead in the seventh with three runs.
Three Cougars, Presley, Ansley and Wallace, each recorded three runs to lead the team.
UP NEXT
The series against Southern Miss will continue on Saturday at 4 p.m., with the finale scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
