Baseball Drops C-USA Opener, 7-4, to UCF

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston snapped a five game win streak in Conference USA openers Friday night, falling to UCF, 7-4, at Cougar Field.
With the loss, Houston falls to 10-10 on the season and 0-1 in league action.
UCF jumped on the board first in the league opener, scoring a run in the second inning, but Houston answered in the fifth. Matt Creel led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on Austin Gracey's ground out to first base. Chris Wallace put two runners on base with his single to centerfield before Creel scored on Matt Murphy's pinch hit down the left field line. Presley plated the second Cougar run on his RBI single to third base to give Houston the early 2-1 lead.
The two teams traded runs in the sixth inning. Houston once again led off the inning with a walk and Caleb Ramsey put the Cougars back on top, scoring on Gracey's single through the right side.
Houston held on to the lead until the eighth inning, when the Golden Knights put three runs on the board, taking a 5-3 lead. UH, however, cut the deficit to one in the home half of the inning. Creel earned a walk to start the inning and scored on Blake Kelso's single up the right side of the field.
Unfortunately, leading 5-4, UCF cemented their league opening win in the top of the ninth when Ryan Breen hit a two-run home run off Taylor Hammack.
Michael Goodnight earned the start on Friday night, going six innings, surrendering two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. Chase Dempsay and Taylor Hammack combined to pitch the final three innings, giving up a combined five runs on five hits with one strikeout.
Kelso was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and Presley added two hits and an RBI.
Houston will continue on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., while the finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
