San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The University of Houston baseball team extended its win streak to five games with a 6-2 win over Cal Poly on Saturday night at Baggett Stadium.
With the win, Houston takes the series against the Mustangs and will go into Sunday's finale looking for the sweep. UH now stands at 7-5 on the year and 3-2 in the all-time series with Cal Poly.
For the second straight game, the Cougars allowed Cal Poly to jump on the board first, forcing them to play from behind. But after the Mustangs scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, M.P. Cokinos hit his second home run of the series over left field to tie the score. Chris Wallace followed with a double that bounced off the right field fence before scoring on Caleb Ramsey's RBI single to right field. With the Cougars leading 2-1, Blake Kelso plated another Houston run, sending Ramsey home on a single to left field.
The third inning was a scoreless inning for both teams and Cal Poly pulled within one, scoring on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth inning. That would prove to be their final run of the contest as Houston held them scoreless for the final five innings. Once again the Cougars answered the Mustang run, scoring a single run in the top of the fifth. After loading the bases on two walks and a single, Jake Runte's walk plated Wallace who led off the inning.
Kelso recorded his second RBI of the game, scoring Ryan Still on a triple to the right field corner to extend Houston's lead 5-2 in the eighth inning. On the next pitch Kelso scored off a bunt from Joel Ansley.
Michael Goodnight earned the win on the mound for Houston, going six innings while allowing five hits and two runs with six strikeouts. He improves to 3-1 on the year. Taylor Hammack provided an inning of scoreless relief, giving up one hit with a strikeout. Matt Creel pitched the final two innings, surrendering three hits with two strikeouts.
Houston returns to the field tomorrow for the series finale, which is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
