Soccer Falls to Conference Powerhouse Marshall in League Opener

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - The University of Houston soccer team fell 2-1 to Marshall in its Conference USA opener Friday night at Sam Hood Field.
The Thundering Herd drew first blood early in the game when senior forward Molly Snead netted her third goal of the season. Assisted by sophomore forward Angela DeSumma, Snead was able to capitalize on a fast breakaway in the seventh minute.
Marshall continued momentum with a second goal in the 21st minute. Freshman midfielder Sarah Vinson also tallied her third goal of the season when she carried the ball past the Cougar defense and shot from the box.
Eight minutes later, Houston answered back when, in a fast breakaway, junior forward Lauri Byrne scored her first goal of the season. The goal was Byrne's fifth career goal and sophomore midfielder Ryan Bruz notched her first career assist.
Houston keeper Lauren Frazier tallied six saves; five of which occurred in the first half.
The Cougars were outshot 14-6 by Marshall but held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The loss drops UH to 2-6 on the season while Marshall strengthens its record to 8-1. The Thundering Herd now leads the all time series 3-1.
