Hattiesburg, Miss. -- The University of Houston baseball team defeated Marshall 4-1 Thursday morning, to advance to the third day of the Conference USA Championship.
The Cougars took a 1-1 tie into the eighth inning, where they scored three runs to pull ahead en route to the win. Jake Runte led off with a double to left center and advanced to third on an error by the Marshall left fielder. Taylor White grounded out to second and Blake Kelso was intentionally walked. The go ahead run came off a Zak Presley bunt single to the pitcher, advancing Kelso to second and scoring Runte. Ramsey and Dempsay then recorded two consecutive walks that loaded the bases and scored Kelso before a Chris Wallace walk scored Presley.
Marshall jumped on the board first in the game, scoring a single run in the bottom of the third. Houston answered in the top of the fourth when Caleb Ramsey hit a triple to right center field and scored on a ground out to the shortstop off Chase Dempsay.
Wes Musick earned the start on the mound going 4.2 innings, allowing six hits and only one run with four strikeouts. Chase Dempsay pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, earning the win, while Donnie Joseph earned his 10th save of the season, pitching the final inning of the game.
With the win Houston advances to the third day of the tournament and will play the loser of the 4 p.m. game against UAB and Rice.
