EL PASO, Texas - The University of Houston soccer team limited Conference USA rival UTEP to one goal in its loss to the Miners Friday night at University Field.
Houston (4-10-2, 2-5-2 C-USA) prevented UTEP (13-4-0, 7-2-0 C-USA) from drawing blood for 72 minutes. The Minders capitalized on junior defender Melissa Desilets' long pass off of a free kick. Sophomore net minder Lauren Frazier came out of the goal box, giving senior forward Tameka Sumter the opportunity to tap the ball into the goal, notching her ninth goal of the season.
Juniors Lauri Byrne and Melanie Adelman lead the Cougars with three shots each while Frazier collected five saves. The Miners outshot Houston 12-9 but the Cougars had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-1.
The all-time series between the two programs stands at 2-5-0 in the Miners' favor.
The Cougars close out the weekend Sunday at Colorado Springs, Colo., against Colorado College at 12 p.m. CT.
