HOUSTON - The 19th-ranked University of Houston baseball team took advantage of six runs and three errors to score eight runs in the second inning on the way to a 9-6 win over area-rival Sam Houston State on Wednesday in a non-conference game at Cougar Field.
After scoring a run in the first, the Cougars sent 11 men to the plate in building a 9-0 lead. Freshman shortstop Blake Kelso, senior outfielder Bryan Tully and senior second baseman Ryan Lormand each rapped out RBI-singles to highlight the frame with Bearkat errors allowing four more runs to score.
Senior outfielder Jake Stewart also scored from third base after teaming with Tully on a double steal.
That would be all the offense the Cougars would need the rest of the way, although the Bearkats scored six runs during the next three innings to make the game closer.
Tully went 3-for-4 with a run, stolen base and two RBIs to lead a Cougar offense, which outhit the Bearkats 10-8. Kelso went 2-for-5 with a run and RBI, while Lormand went 2-for-4 with a run, double and RBI.
Freshman starter Jared Ray won his first collegiate game despite allowing six runs off eight hits with four strikeouts in five innings. Sophomore southpaw Donnie Joseph retired all nine batters he faced midway through the game, and redshirt junior reliever Chris Wright collected his first save after pitching a shutout ninth inning.
SHSU starter Will Skelton collected the loss and fell to 2-3 after giving up nine runs (six earned) of seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts in two innings.
Todd Sebek batted 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI, while Keith Stein went 2-for-4 with a run. Jaime Rohlmeier batted 2-for-3 with a run and RBI in the losing effort.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 24-12 overall and won for the eighth time in their last 10 games. Sam Houston State fell to 22-14.
The Cougars return to action this weekend when they face Conference USA rival UAB in a three-game series at Young Memorial Field in Birmingham, Ala. That series begins at 7 p.m., Friday, continues at 2 p.m., Saturday and wraps up at noon, Sunday.

The Cougars struck for the game's first run in the first inning. Jake Stewart reached on a one-out walk, stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw that went into center field and scored on Bryan Tully's two-out single through the right side.
After the Cougars' second-inning outburst, the Bearkats cut into the lead in the third inning with three runs off Todd Sebek's RBI-double, a balk and a groundout that scored Ryan Trevino from third base.
SHSU added a single run in the fourth on Jaime Rohlmeier's RBI-single and scored two runs in the fifth inning on a balk and wild pitch. However, that would be as close as the Bearkats would get the rest of the way.
