SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State erupted for six runs in the fourth inning on the way to an 8-0 win over the University of Houston baseball team Friday during the opener of a non-conference series at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
With the game tied through the first three-and-a-half innings, the Aztecs seized control of the game with six runs off seven hits and a Cougar error in the frame. Nick Romero started the scoring with an RBI-triple, while T.J. Thomas followed with a two-run single. Brandon Glover added an RBI-double and Pat Colwell chipped in with an RBI-single to highlight the SDSU frame.
That would be all the runs the Aztecs would need. San Diego starter Stephen Strasburg collected the win and improved to 3-1 after holding the Cougars to two runs with 12 strikeouts in eight shutout innings.
Freshman shortstop Blake Kelso, senior outfielder Jake Stewart and freshman infielder Matt Murphy collected the Cougars' lone hits of the night.
UH starter Wes Musick, who fell to 5-1, saw his career-best five-game winning streak come to an end after giving up six runs (five earned) off seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
The series continues at 3 p.m. (CDT), Saturday before wrapping up at 3 p.m. (CDT), Sunday. Fans can hear Cougar Baseball games live at UHCougars.com by clicking the appropriate links. Jeremy Branham will call the play-by-play action while former letterwinner Pat Cauley provides color analysis.
