SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State scored seven runs in the final three inning, including two in the bottom of the ninth, to take a 7-6 win over the University of Houston baseball team on Saturday in the middle game of a non-conference series at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Cougars appeared to seize the game's momentum in the top of the ninth inning when senior outfielder Jake Stewart's two-out, two-run homer lifted UH from a one-run deficit to a 6-5 lead. Pinch hitter Felix Fanaselle drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position following a passed ball. After back-to-back strikeouts, Stewart smashed a home run to left field to give the Cougars the lead.
However, the Cougar celebration would not last long. SDSU's Troy Hanzawa led off with a double to left field and moved to third following Garett Green's single to center field. After Cory Vaughn was hit by a pitch to load the bases, T.J. Thomas drew a bases-loaded walk to knot the game at 6-6.
Brandon Glover followed with an RBI-single through the right side for the final margin of victory.
The Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 lead through six-and-a-half innings before the Aztecs staged their comeback. UH scored the game's first runs in the third inning when freshman shortstop Blake Kelso smashed a home run - the first of his career - to right center, and Bryan Pounds' RBI-single to left field plated Stewart, who drew a two-out walk and stole second.
In the fifth inning, the Cougars pushed their lead to 3-0 when Stewart's double down the right-field line plated Kelso, who laced a two-out double to right field.
One inning later, senior second baseman Ryan Lormand drew a one-out walk, moved into scoring position on freshman utility player Matt Murphy's single to center field and eventually came around to score on Chris Wallace's sacrifice fly to center field.
With the loss, the Cougars fell to 16-9, while San Diego State improved to 16-10.
Freshman shortstop Blake Kelso went 2-for-4 with a two runs and his first career home run, while senior outfielder Jake Stewart batted 2-for-3 with two runs, a homer and three RBIs. Senior infielder Bryan Pounds also went 2-for-5 with an RBI in the losing effort.
Garett Green went 2-for-5 with a run and RBI, while Brandon Glover batted 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI to lead the Aztecs. Erik Castro also batted 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs in the winning effort.
UH reliever John Touchton collected the loss and fell to 2-2 after surrendering two runs off three hits and a walk with one strikeout in 0.1 innings. SDSU reliever Brandon Pullen earned the win and improved to 1-0 after retiring the lone batter he faced in the top of the ninth
