LOUISVILLE, Ky. - One day after upsetting #40 Louisville, the University of Houston's quest for back-to-back upsets fell to the wayside, as the Cougars dropped a 5-2 women's tennis decision to #58 South Alabama in Louisville, Ky. With the loss Houston dropped to 11-8 on the season.
With freezing temperatures blanketing the Louisville area, the match was forced indoors; conditions that are not the strong point of the Cougars' overall style of play.
"Playing indoors takes us out of our game," UH head coach John Severance said. "We're just not used to that type of surface, and the game plays really fast indoors. We like to grind it out at times, and it is tough to outwork opponents indoors.
"We had a really good effort in singles, but I was hoping to get some wins at #5 and #6, and we just couldn't. We came up here to Louisville and went 1-1. It wasn't a great weekend, but it wasn't bad one either."
Houston took it on the chin in doubles, where the nationally-ranked Jaguars blasted past the Cougars and won all three matches. As a matter of fact, UH managed to win just four games in losing the doubles point.
In singles action Houston captured just two matches, and senior Leila Salek did the most damage. Facing off against South Alabama's Michaela Babicova at #2 singles, Salek rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 win over the #123-ranked player in the nation. The other win came at #4 where Lynley Wasson took a three-set win, 6-2, 0-6, 6-0, over Katie Welch.
The Cougars next face Oral Roberts and Tulsa on April 4 in Tulsa.
