HOUSTON - In a match postponed due to Saturday's inclement weather, the University of Houston wasted no time in dispatching McNeese State, 6-1, at the John E. Hoff Courts on the UH campus.
The Cougars have won four in a row to improve to 6-4 on the season.
"I thought we came out flat in doubles play," UH head coach John Severance commented. "But, after that we played really well, which is good to see as a coach. I'm glad that this is something that happened early in the season, so we have the ability to correct by the end of the season.
"Overall, we stepped up when we had to. That's all you can ask of your team."
Doubles action was hotly contested, especially at #3 where Vicky Simpson and Leila Salek fought off the challenge of Natascha Jonganeel and Inga Efimenko, 8-5. Then UH captured the doubles point when Jordan McCombs and Lucy Forward downed Meri Gol Alamo and Victoria Martinez, 8-2, at #1, followed by Lynley Wasson and Joanna Kacprzyk's #2-win over Rocio Frausto and Petra Gudelj, 8-3.
Moving to singles play, the Cougars swept #2 through #6 for the second straight day and did not lose a set in the process. Salek blasted Jongeneel at #2, 6-0, 6-0, while Neila Starratt took out Martinez at #3, 6-4, 6-4.
At #4 Kacprzyk cruised past Frausto, 6-0, 6-1, and Wasson took down Gudelj, 6-1, 6-2. McCombs rounded out the match with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory over Efimenko at #6.
Forward struggled at #1, falling 7-5, 6-1 to Gol Alamo.
Houston hits the road for its next three matches, heading to Northern Louisiana to face both Louisiana Tech and Grambling State on February 22, then traveling to Dallas on February 23, to square off against Conference USA foe SMU.
