"I am very pleased with the performances this weekend. This tournament is used to challenge our players and match-ups among different spots. It is also used to identify the players' strengths and weaknesses," head coach John Severance said.
The Rice Invitational and the ITA Regionals are used for preparation for the upcoming season and fall tournaments hosted by Houston. The Cougars look to improve on their 2008 season with a 16-11 record and quarterfinal finish in the Conference USA Championship.
For the 2008 season, sophomore Joanna Kacprzyk and senior Lynley Wasson had the second-best C-USA record in No. 2 doubles with 7 wins and 1 loss.
Senior Vicky Simpson is looking to break into the UH record books this season for her 68 career wins in singles play. She is just four shy of breaking into the Top 10 for singles wins in a career.
Severance is also looking to set records this season. Severance finished the 2008 season with his fourth-consecutive winning record. With the wins, Severance has increased his overall record to 66-35, ranking him third on Houston's all-time coaching records, leaving him just five wins shy of second-place coach Daryl Gralka. Severance is ranked second with his winning percentage of .653.
