No. 67 Tennis Tops Middle Tennessee State

HOUSTON - The No. 67 University of Houston tennis team continued its five-match homestand winning four of six singles matches against Middle Tennessee State Wednesday at Hoff Courts.
Due to strong winds, the two teams played singles matches only.
"With the conditions, it was not favorable to high quality tennis," Severance said. "We knew we had to play a more discipline brand of tennis and that was the determining factor in today's match."
The Cougars (9-2) stay undefeated at home this season as Kami Miller came off the courts first with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. Miller has won 16 of her last 19 matches and is now eight wins away from moving into the No. 7 slot all-time in career singles victories.
Yolandi Terblanche put the Cougars ahead 2-0 notching a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 5 hole, while Loli Gomez stretched the UH advantage to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2.
"The top three of the lineup really stepped in a huge way today," Severance said. "We're starting to play to the strength of the team which is our depth. Different folks are responding at different times and it's paying off for us."
Middle Tennessee State stayed alive as Pooja Kommereddi knocked off Vicky Simpson a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 match at the bottom of the lineup.
Houston responded by clinching the match as Brianna Bateup picked up 6-3, 6-2 victory in the top slot.
The Cougars continue its eight day home swing Friday against Lee College. Loli Gomez will get the chance to take on her former team where she was named National Junior College Player of the Year a season ago.
"We've done this (playing Lee) over the last couple over the years," Severance said. "They are a top junior college program and it will be a special experience for Loli. She's really looking forward to it."
