No. 70 Tennis Derails Texas Pan-American

HOUSTON - The No. 70 University of Houston tennis team opened the weekend with a 7-0 romp of Texas Pan-American Saturday afternoon at Hoff Courts.
"I told the team all week that we can't take anyone lightly," head coach John Severance said. "We've had a tendency at times to play up or down to our competition. We saw how we could play against a Top 10 at Arizona State. This is how we should play from hear on out."
The Cougars (13-3, 1-0 C-USA) improve to 9-0 at home this season with five dual matches remaining inside the friendly confines of Hoff Courts.
Houston stormed out of the gates grabbing the doubles point as the pairs of Loli Gomez and Sonja Nikolic along with Brianna Bateup and Vicky Simpson cruised to 8-1 and 8-0 victories, respectively.
"I was impressed with our doubles effort especially Brianna and Vicky at No. 2," Severance said. "Across the board we took care of business and had a great day on the courts."
The Cougars continued its strong play into singles action. After Sarah Reimer picked up a default victory in the No. 6 hole, Kami Miller pushed the Houston advantage to 3-0 reeling off a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. Miller is now six wins away from moving into No. 7 all-time in career singles victories.
At the top of the lineup, Gomez and Bateup clinched the match dropping four games between them.
Vicky Simpson emerged with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. 5 slot finalizing the sweep for the Cougars.
Houston concludes the weekend with a C-USA clash against Tulsa. First serve against the Golden Hurricane is slated for 11am at Hoff Courts.
"We have the momentum and confidence heading into the match tomorrow," Severance said. "Our team knows the importance of this match and what it means towards the seeding in the conference tournament."
