HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston women's basketball team used a 14-0 run in the first 3:08 of the game to knock off Southern Miss 92-58, in Conference USA action on Sunday at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars (5-8, 2-0 C-USA) were up 7-0 before the Golden Eagles (4-10, 1-2 C-USA) had even taken a shot. Houston knocked down seven more points before Southern Miss finally got on the board when Ashley Boehnel sank a jumper at the 16:07 mark. UH fired at a 62.1 percent clip (18 for 29) in the half, and led 54-21 at the half, a season-best for points in a half and points in the first half.
UH has won two-straight games for the first time this season and moved to 2-0 in C-USA play for the third-consecutive year. Souther Miss has lost two in-a-row and five of the past six.
Houston had a season-best shooting performance both from the floor and behind the three-point arc. UH was 33 for 61 (.541) in the game including a 7 for 14 (.500) effort from long range. The 32 field-goals made was a season-best while UH's 19 made free throws tied a season-high. UH did end the night with 21 turnovers, nearly tripling their number from Friday's game (8).
Nakazi Glover (Brookshire, Texas/Bellaire HS) and Ryan Meyers (Arlington, Texas/Arlington HS/Grayson County CC) tallied 20 combined points in the opening stanza, compared to 21 points for Southern Miss' entire team. Glover tallied 16 points in 17 first-half minutes as the freshman knocked down nine free throws in the opening 20 minutes. Meyers had 14 points and was a perfect 7 for 7 from the field in the half.
Glover finished with a career-best 21 points and nearly had her first-career double-double as she pulled down a career-best nine boards. She has averaged 16.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in the last four outings. Meyers also had a career high with 19 points. She missed only two shots on the night, going 9 for 11 from the field.
The Cougars ran the margin to as many as 43, 82-39, with 6:54 left and cruised to the 34-point win. It was UH's first game scoring more than eighty points this season and its best offensive output since a 92-47 win over Saint Louis on Feb. 5, 2005. That game was also the last time UH won by more than 30 points (45).
UH's full-court press gave the visitors fits as the Golden Eagles gave the ball up 11 times in the first 10 minutes and 17 times in the first half. For the game, Southern Miss had 25 giveaways, which turned into 33 points for Houston. The Cougars held a dominant 40-8 advantage in the paint and outrebounded Southern Miss by 10, 43-33.
Emily Fryters (Adelaide, Australia/Concordia College) and Sha'Quaylon McKinney (Dallas, Texas/Skyline HS/Trinity Valley CC) also hit career highs, finishing with 12 and six pints, respectively. Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) was once again close to hitting for a triple double, finishing with 15 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
Jasmin Moore (Houston, Texas/Lagham Creek HS) missed the game for UH after re-injuring her foot against UCF on Friday night. Her status is day-to-day.
Houston returns to action next weekend with a pair of matchups. The Cougars hit the road for the first time in nearly a month to take on East Carolina Friday night at 7 p.m. EST in Greenville, N.C. UH holds a 4-0 all-time record over ECU and is 2-0 in Williams Arena. The Cougars return to Hofheinz Pavilion Sunday for a 4 p.m. showdown with local rival Rice. The two squads will meet for the first time on the hardwood as league rivals with ESPN2 set to televise the action.
