DALLAS, Texas - The University of Houston women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak ended by a 66-53 loss to SMU in Conference USA action at Moody Coliseum.
Houston (7-9, 4-1 C-USA) struggled to a 30 percent (21 for 70) shooting effort on the night and was held to just a pair of field goals in the opening five minutes of both halves. UH also was 2 for 17 from behind the three-point line. SMU (9-9, 4-2 C-USA), jumped on UH early, leading from buzzer to buzzer despite making 25 turnovers.
The Cougars trailed by 13 at the half, 37-24, and went down 17, 41-24, in the first two minutes of the second half, forcing head coach Joe Curl to burn a timeout and steady the troops. The two teams traded buckets over the next six minutes, with UH trailing 49-32 with 12:06 remaining.
A pair of free throws from Kadi Creel (Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville HS) at the 11:17 mark started a 21-10 Houston run that had the lead down to six, 59-53 with 2:01 left in the game. That bucket, a three-pointer by Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue), would be the last points of the evening for UH as SMU was 7 for 10 from the charity stripe in the final 1:56 to hand UH the 13-point defeat.
Jackson and Nakazi Glover (Brookshire, Texas/Bellaire HS) were the only UH played to find double figures with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Both fouled out in the game's final minute.
The Cougars started off the game in an 8-2 hole but were able to pull within one at 8-7 with 13:00 left in the first 20 minutes. SMU pulled ahead, but never were able to pull away and UH trailed by three, 25-22, after a three-point play by Jackson with 5:03 left. A layup by SMU's Janielle Dodds with 3:37 remaining started a 12-2 SMU run to close out the half, handing the Mustangs the 37-24 advantage at the break.
Dodds led all players with 20 points and added 10 rebounds to close out the double double. Kendall Shead knocked down 16 points along with nine rebounds while Katy Cobb added 12 and Sarah Davis grabbed 13 boards.
Houston closes out the two-game road swing with a Sunday matchup at Tulsa, slotted for a 2 p.m. CST tipoff.
