HOUSTON - Behind two goals by Kristin Bay the University of Houston soccer team played to a 2-2 tie against North Texas in a double-overtime thriller on Sunday afternoon at John O'Quinn field at Robertson Stadium.
Kristen Bay continues to come through for us every week, finding some kind of way to finish," head coach Bill Solberg said.
Bay got things started off for Houston in the 39th minute as she scored her fifth goal of the season on a rebound kick to put the Cougars up 1-0.
Over half way through first half midfielder Courtney Gaines went down with an injury and was replaced by Tiare Austin.
"Losing Courtney Gaines in the middle hurt us," Solberg said. "She is a great battler, she does a lot of dirty work for us. As a team we had to grow a little bit."
At the 55th minute mark the Mean Green evened up the match as Heather Hutyra scored off a center pass from Kristen Campbell.
At the 81 minute mark Hutyra tallied her second goal of the day to put UNT up 2-1.
That lead did not last long for the Mean Green as Bay scored her second goal of the game and her seventh of the year to tie the game up with just minutes remaining.
After Bay's kick, the rest of the game was primarily a defensive war for both teams as there were few opportunities for goals on both sides.
"We are happy with our weekend because we went undefeated," Solberg said. "I was very proud of our team because they came back to get a result that was not a loss in this heat against a tough team like North Texas."
The Cougars (4-2-1) finish up their seven game homestand against Nicholls State this Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Robertson Stadium. Nicholls State comes into Tuesday's game with a 2-3 record.
"Every week in practice we do something competitive, and we instill in our players that the bottom line in everything that we do is winning," added Solberg. "It's paying off because they are battling just as hard in the game as they do in practice."
