Bateup Clinches Round One For Houston

FORT WORTH, Texas - The first round of the Conference USA Women's Tennis Tournament turned out well for the No. 74 Houston tennis team that blanked Cincinnati in a 4-0 match on Thursday to move on to the quarterfinal round.
Earning the fourth seed in the tournament, the Cougars made quick work of the 13th-seeded Bearcats, sweeping the doubles and then clinching the win with victories at the top three singles spots.
In the end it was the play of freshman Brianna Bateup at the No. 3 spot that secured the Cougars' victory with a 6-0, 6-4 win to earn Houston's fourth point.
"We came out strong in doubles to win the doubles point, then our top three came out and won pretty quick and pretty easy," said head coach John Severance summing up the first-round match.
In doubles play, the of junior Sarah Reimer and Yolandi Terblanche downed the sister act of Jill and Julie Klauck, 8-2, while senior Diana Martin and junior Kami Miller breezed by Madison Reasoner and Cristina Reyes in an 8-0 victory.
With the singles point clinched, senior Biljana Dimovska and Bateup ended their match leading 6-3.
In singles play, five of the six Cougars won their first set before the top three spots won their second set to close out the match.
At the No. 1 spot, Dimovska came away with a 6-2, 6-1 win, while Martin claimed the No. 2 spot in 6-2, 6-4 fashion, and Bateup closed out the match with win at No. 3.
Next up for the Cougars will be the fifth-seeded DePaul Blue Demons who downed Memphis in a 4-0 match in the first round.
"We now have a very strong No. 5 seed DePaul tomorrow and are anticipating a dogfight," said Severance. "It is going to take a team effort to win the championship from all six singles and all three doubles. They all have to step up and take care of their individual points."
