HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team drubbed Miami University in a 6-1 afternoon match in Orlando, Fla. on Friday.
Houston's win improves the Cougars' record to 10-5 on the season with one more match remaining in Florida before Houston returns home.
Friday's match began with the Cougars sweeping the doubles pairings to take the early 1-0 lead on the day.
The Australian duo of senior Biljana Dimovska and freshman Brianna Bateup claimed the No. 1 doubles position in an easy 8-4 match. Senior Diana Martin and junior Kami Miller followed with an 8-6 at No. 2 and junior Yolandi Terblanche teamed with junior Sarah Reimer to win at No. 3, 9-8.
The singles pairings saw much of the same, as Houston claimed five of six matches to close out the match.
"Our top three gutted through some tough matches," said head coach John Severance. "But we set the tone early by sweeping the doubles matches and it carried over into our singles play."
The No. 1, 2 and 3 positions went three sets, while the No. 4, 5 and 6 spot were settled by Cougar wins in just two sets.
It was with freshman Tiffany McLoughlin's win at the No. 6 spot that the Cougar's clinched the victory, while Dimovska battled to a three-set win at No. 1, as did Martin at No. 3.
The lone singles loss was a tight 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 loss by Bateup at the No. 2 spot.
Houston closes out its weekend facing UCF on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
