Houston Soccer Falls at South Carolina

Three Gamecocks combined to record their first goals of the season as South Carolina handed the University of Houston women's soccer team its third consecutive loss, 4-1, on Friday (Sept. 3) night at Stone Stadium in Columbia, S.C. South Carolina earned its second straight as Sara Jane Harris, Stacy Maxwell and Ashley Williams all scored their first goals of the season with freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Thorstenson picking up her second win of the year. Carolina scpred first at 33:49 when Harris notched the game's first goal. Off an Ashley Kirk corner kick, Harris was able to get her head on the ball and hit it past Houston keeper Katie Cook for a one-goal lead. The Gamecocks gained a 2-0 lead early into the second period of play when, at 49:24, the Gamecocks' cross kick went into the box went off a Houston defender into the net for an own goal. Houston crept to within one goal as Nikki Hawkins launched a shot from 30 yards out that went just over the head of South Carolina goalie Thorstenson for a score. It was Hawkins' second goal of the season. However, USC came back in the final six minutes of play with two more goals as the offense continued to attack and put pressure on the Houston net. Under defensive pressure, Ashley Williams broke loose and knocked a five-yard shot past Cook for a goal at 84:27. Then, minutes later, Stacy Maxwell finished off the scoring at 88:09 as she knocked in a rebound shot to give USC a three-goal lead. Ashley Gosnell was credited with an assist. South Carolina finished the evening out-shooting Houston, 21-3, with 10 corner kicks as well. With the loss, the Cougars falls to 0-3-0 overall on the year. Next up, they travel to play Wofford on Sunday, Sept. 5, at noon.
