SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Cougar junior Kami Miller walked away from the San Diego Tennis Tournament as the Single B-Flight Champion on Sunday, after dropping her opponent, Lauren Kazarian of the University of San Diego, in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-3.
Miller has now won 12 consecutive matches dating back to April 3 of last season, including her undefeated run in the 2004 C-USA Tournament.
Over the three days of the tournament, the Cougars managed to go a combined 12-9 with some of the top teams in the country.
"If you look at the preseason rankings we were the lowest ranked team coming in and we managed to hold our own," said first year head coach John Severance.
The 2004 squad returns four players from last season and adds two newcomers, all of whom had good showing in their first matches of the year. "We had a lot of close matches where the girls went three sets, I am happy with Kami and her win today and the progress with the other five girls," said Severance.
Houston will next participate in the Regional Tournament being held at College Station on Oct. 15-17.
