Tyler Cox, Tre Broussard, Xavier Perez and Antonelli Savattere tally two hits apiece
HOUSTON – University of Houston shortstop Tyler Cox, outfielders Tre Broussard and Xavier Perez and second baseman Antonelli Savattere recorded two hits each, but it would not be enough as the Cougars fell 14-7 to Baylor at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Cox added a run, triple and two RBIs while third baseman Riley Jackson led the Cougars with three RBIs. Perez finished the day with two runs and a double and Savattere added a run in the loss.
Â
Houston (13-14, 1-8 Big 12) starter Paul Schmitz picked up the loss and fell to 2-2 after allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
Baylor (16-11, 5-4) starter Ethan Calder collected the win and improved to 2-3 after allowing four runs off seven hits with a pair of strikeouts in seven innings.
Â
Brady Janusek led the Baylor offense, going 2-for-6 with three runs, a home run and two RBIs. Travis Sanders batted 2-for-6 with a run, and John Youens went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. JJ Kennett went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, and Ty Johnson and Brytton Clements tied for the team lead with a pair of RBIs.
Â
Baylor struck for the game's first runs, taking advantage of a hit batter, base hit, a throwing error in the infield, a groundout and wild pitch, to take a 4-0 lead in the top of the second.
Â
The score stayed that way until the fourth inning when back-to-back two-out doubles from Kennett and Cade Dodson pushed the Baylor lead to 5-0.
Â
Baylor loaded the bases in the fifth inning and took a 6-0 advantage when Clements' groundout allowed Janusek to score from third.
Â
The Cougars cut into the deficit in the bottom of the frame. After Jackson was hit by a pitch and Savattere singled into shallow right field, Cox cleared the bags with a triple to the wall in right center and scored himself on an errant throw from the outfield for a 6-3 Baylor lead.
Â
Perez moved the Cougars to within 6-4 after launching the first pitch he saw over the wall in left center to lead off the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Baylor pushed its lead back to four runs at 8-4 on Youens' RBI-double to center field and Johnson's RBI-single in the top of the seventh.
Â
The Bears added four more runs in the eighth inning on Pearson Riebock's RBI-bunt single, Tyce Armstrong's RBI-double and a Clements RBI-single for a 12-4 lead.
Â
In the bottom of the eighth, Houston loaded the bases, and Jackson cleared them with a double down the left-field line to trim the deficit to 12-7.
Â
Baylor added two more runs on Janusek's two-run homer in the ninth for the final margin of victory.
