GAME SUMMARY
After the Longhorns earned a 1-0 lead in the first, Texas went on to add three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-0 edge.
The Cougars started their comeback in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded, senior Tyler Cox grounded out to drive home junior Easton Winfield. Both sophomore Jackson LaLima and senior Cade Climie scored in the next at-bat when junior Tre Broussard laced a single into center, cutting the deficit to four.
After a scoreless sixth, Houston added another three runs in the seventh. Winfield led off the inning with a home run against his former team, making the score 7-4. After LaLima doubled and Cox walked to put a pair of runners on base, Broussard forced a defensive miscue from the Longhorns to drive home LaLima. Cox scored during the next batter as Broussard forced yet another Longhorn error as he swiped second.
The rally was completed during the eighth. Junior Riley Jackson hit his team-leading sixth homer of the season to tie the game while Cox picked up his second RBI of the game as he singled home Winfield, who scored his third run of the contest to take an 8-7 lead. After Broussard drew a walk to load the bases, freshman Blake Fields drew a second consecutive walk for Houston to force home Climie, solidifying the scoring at 9-7.
Rodriguez entered the game in the ninth, striking out two of the three Longhorns he faced to clinch the two-run win for Houston.
