Cougars weather the storm to defeat Iowa State, 4-3

AMES, Iowa — The #40 University of Houston Tennis team captured its first Big 12 Conference road win in program history with a 4-3 victory over Iowa State on Sunday afternoon at the Cyclone Tennis Courts.

After seniors Sophie Schouten and Chems Doha Zeghlouli defeated Mari Alberto Vilar and Ashlee Narker, 6-3, the Cougars (13-4, 4-4 Big 12) lost the doubles point as junior pairs Valeriia Krokhotina and Iva Sepa and Petja Drame and Elizaveta Morozova both fell 6-4 on courts two and three, respectively.

Houston jumped in front with a pair of straight-set wins as Schouten defeated Gabriella Kellner, 6-2, 6-3, court six, Drame took care of Alicia Dale, 6-4, 6-1 on court five.

Iowa State (2-12, 0-7 Big 12) leveled the match as Narker defeated Zeghlouli on court two, 6-3, 6-4, before the Cyclones took the lead as Stanisla Shulzhenko reverse swept Sepa, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 on court three.

After being shutout in set one, Krokhotina grinded out a 7-6(1) set two win before tying the match with a 6-2 set three victory.

Despite dropping a marathon first set, 6(9)-7, Morozova bounced back with a reverse sweep winning 6-4, 6-3, to knock off #83 Vilar and claim the Cougars first conference road win since joining the Big 12.
